Striving for a Sustainable Future

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Turner Price. We understand our responsibility, and the responsibility of the wider industry, to the future of the planet as well as to our customers, employees and suppliers.

Our commitment to sustainability is anchored in four key values that capture our approach towards responsible business practices. At the core of our ethos is a dedication to fostering strong connections with local communities as well as delivering products and services to customers that align with their environmental and social responsibilities. We also value collaboration with partners understanding that this is essential for driving positive change across all areas of our business and through the supply chain. Finally, Turner Price is unwavering in its dedication to addressing the global challenge of climate change, actively seeking innovative solutions to minimize our environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

In order to achieve the goal of building a sustainable future it’s important that we join forces with individuals, communities, and businesses. We believe in collaboration to make a positive impact on the environment as together we have more power to create a bright future.

Climate Partner

In 2022 we began working with ClimatePartner, a leading climate solutions provider. They have helped us calculate our CO2 emissions and support us in reducing our emissions using a 5-Step Strategy. With their support and guidance, we are proud to have reduced our carbon intensity by 24% between 2019 and 2022!

Sustainability Committee

In 2022 we formed our Sustainability Committee which is made up of representatives from all areas of the business, ensuring there is a culture change across the business. They meet throughout the year to implement solutions and measure progress. Some of the key changes they have made include the introduction of food waste recycling and substantial investments into our cold store building.

Food Waste

The UK sends nearly 10 million tonnes of food waste to landfill every year and as a food wholesaler we are very conscious of our industries contribution towards this figure.

For our depots food waste, we work with ReFood who offer a sustainable and alternative solution to sending food waste to landfill. They collect our food waste which is then converted into either renewable energy and fed back into the National Grid or made into a nutrient rich biofertiliser that is used by farmers to grow crops on their fields. In 2023 alone, we saved over 7.5 tonnes of food waste from ending up in landfill!

Packaging Waste

It is inevitable that we produce waste packaging within our depots and although it would be impossible become wrapping and plastic free overnight, it is important we recycle as much as possible. We have plastic and cardboard balers in our warehouses that condense packaging waste and is then collected by our partners. In 2023 alone we saved over 70 tonnes of waste going to landfill.

It’s very important to us to continue to develop a product offering to customers that leads the way in the foodservice industry, but we don’t just stop there. Customers are the forefront of our business, and we are passionate about providing added value in areas that are important to them.

We choose suppliers that put sustainability and transparency at the heart of their businesses and products. Many of them are family-owned British businesses that pride themselves on ethically sourcing ingredients, maintaining the highest standards of food safety and supporting British supply chains. All customers get the opportunity to meet with suppliers to see their ever-expanding product offering and to share best practice at our twice-yearly Cater Expo event.

Another way we support customers is through our Development Chef. Neil advises customers across all sectors with menu planning, recipe inspiration and sustainable food swaps through either visiting them or hosting culinary themed days at our Customer Innovation Centre.

At Turner Price, we recognise our duty to the local communities in Hull and the surrounding regions. We actively support charities, local partnerships, and initiatives that enhance the well-being of the communities they serve.

Turner Price Catering Club

In 2023, we launched the Turner Price Catering Club initiative. The aim is to promote a career within the foodservice and catering industries by working with local school and college students on different initiatives throughout the year.

Food Donations

Throughout the year we continually donate surplus food to local food banks and cooking groups within Hull. After our most recent Cater Expo event our suppliers were incredibly generous and donated a full pallet worth of food to a Hull based foodbank.

Natasha’s Allergy Research Foundation

In late 2023 the Country Range Group announced a 3-year partnership with the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, the only charity in the UK dedicated to scientific and medical research into food allergies. We are really excited about launching our 2024 charity plans to raise awareness and of course vital funds in conjunction with NARF.
