Turner Price is delighted to congratulate the city of Hull on achieving the prestigious Sustainable Food Places Silver Award—a national recognition of outstanding work to create a healthier, fairer and more sustainable local food system.
The award highlights the impact of the Hull Food Partnership, a network of more than 100 organisations working together to improve access to good-quality food across the city. Their collaborative approach is helping tackle key issues such as food poverty, diet-related ill-health and the need to support local food producers and retailers.
A Year of Meaningful Progress
Over the past year, Hull Food Partnership and Hull City Council have delivered several pioneering initiatives, including:
- Right to Grow policy – giving residents the assumed right to grow food on unused council land. Hull is the first UK city to introduce this.
- Hull Food Strategy and Action Plan – shaping a vision where nutritious, great-tasting food becomes accessible for everyone while supporting local businesses.
- Feeding communities in need – through the Hull Food Inequality Alliance, the partnership has secured government funding to help organisations provide food support across the city.
- Support for children – ongoing work to ensure more young people are eligible for free school meals.
A City Working Together
Leaders across the city praised the achievement, emphasising that Hull’s progress is rooted in collaboration between charities, community groups, independent businesses and the council. Initiatives such as the Hull Open Spaces Network, which now connects more than 140 members, show how community-led projects are reshaping the local food environment.
The award also reflects the strength of Hull’s growing food culture—from community growing schemes to support for diverse independent retailers.
Setting the Standard for the UK
The Sustainable Food Places Network, which includes more than 120 members nationwide, praised Hull for demonstrating what is possible when local partners unite behind a shared commitment to good food for all. Hull’s achievement now serves as a benchmark for other regions aiming to transform their food systems.
