At Turner Price, we’re proud to supply schools that are rethinking what school food can be—bringing together nutrition, education, and sustainability goals in meaningful ways. One inspiring example is how Fixby Primary School, part of the Polaris Multi Academy Trust, is using its school allotment to shape both learning and school meals.
Learning that starts in the soil
At Fixby Primary, pupils take an active role in growing a wide variety of seasonal fruit and vegetables. From planting seeds to harvesting crops, children gain hands-on experience that builds understanding of:
- – Where food comes from
- – Seasonality and sustainability
- – Healthy eating and nutrition
- – Environmental responsibility
This practical approach helps bring food education to life beyond the classroom.
From harvest to school meals
What makes this initiative stand out is how the produce is then used within school kitchens.
Fresh rhubarb and strawberries grown on the allotment have recently been transformed into a “Polaris Eton Mess,” combining stewed rhubarb, strawberries, cherry compote, vegan cream, and meringue. This dessert has been enjoyed across primary schools within the Trust, including pupils at Highbury SEN School.
Supporting early years nutrition
For younger children at Smarties Nursery, the harvest is adapted into simple, age-appropriate dishes such as soft fruit sponge cakes—helping ensure all ages can engage with fresh, seasonal produce.
Seasonal produce in everyday menus
The allotment continues to provide a wide range of ingredients now featured across school menus, including:
- – Peas and radishes in fresh salads
- – Onions and courgettes in tomato pasta sauce
- – Raspberries, strawberries, and rhubarb in desserts
- – Lemon thyme for roast potatoes
- – Coriander in dishes such as Rogan Josh
It’s a great example of seasonal growing directly influencing daily school meals.
Looking ahead
As the seasons change, the allotment is expected to produce pumpkins, carrots, leeks, potatoes, and apples—ingredients that will continue to feature in school menus throughout the year.
We’re pleased to supply Polaris Multi Academy Trust, who are truly championing this kind of hands-on, inspiring approach to food.
